Wnt4 Induces HSPC Self‐renewal

A small number of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) residing in the bone marrow ensure blood cell production in the adult. Both cell-intrinsic and microenvironmental factors can induce the activity of HSPCs to increase blood formation. In a new STEM CELLS study, researchers led by Krista M. Heinonen (INRS‐Centre Armand‐Frappier Santé Biotechnologie, Laval, QC, Canada) report how Wnt4 expression by blood-forming cells favors their accumulation in a situation of intense blood cell production. Overall, the findings presented by Hétu‐Arbour et al. suggest Wnt4 as a candidate to promote blood cell production after chemotherapy.
