StEMM and the Heart Stem Cell Niche

The presence and localization of stem/progenitor cell niches in the heart remain under constant debate. In a new STEM CELLS article, researchers led by Karl-Henrik Grinnemo (Uppsala University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden) report on the development of a Spatiotemporal Extracellular Matrix Model (StEMM), which combines a modified protocol for decellularization with cryo-sectioning, recellularization, and subsequent image processing (including automatic binning and the generation of cluster maps). Oleson et al. developed StEMM within a cardiac context and validated it using syngeneic mesenchymal progenitor cells; however, the authors note the unrestricted nature of this model.
