Sox2-Fos Mediated Control of NSC Self-renewal

The proliferation and maintenance of neural stem cells (NSCS) supports normal brain development and, postnatally, maintains hippocampal function and memory until advanced age; however, we know little regarding the molecular mechanisms that maintain critical aspects of postnatal NSC biology. A new STEM CELLS study from Silvia K. Nicolis (University of Milano‐Bicocca, Milan, Italy) describes a methodology (transduction of genes deregulated following Sox2 deletion, such as Fos) that allows the testing of candidate genes for their ability to sustain NSC proliferation.
