Scaffold-boosted ASC-mediated Bone Regrowth
Bone regrowth may be achieved using different biomaterial scaffolds that provide structural and biological cues to stem cells to stimulate osteogenic differentiation. Furthermore, new knowledge regarding the mechanisms of bone repair is of paramount importance to address the significant steps required for precise translational medicine to treat patients. Now, a new STEM CELLS Translational Medicine article from the labs of Mauro Tognon and Fernanda Martini (University of Ferrara, Ferrara, Italy) report on the significant osteogenic induction of transplanted human adipose‐derived stem cells (ASCs) using the hybrid scaffold Pro Osteon200/Avitene Collagen. This new study from Mazzoni et al. indicates that the continuous expression of osteogenic, osteoclastic, and chondrogenic genes favors bone regrowth.
