An Old Nice Restrains Rejuvenated HSCs

A new STEM CELLS article from researchers led by Hartmut Geiger (Ulm University, Germany) reports on how an aged niche influences ex vivo rejuvenated old hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Guidi et al. demonstrate that an aged niche restrains the function of ex vivo rejuvenated HSCs, due, in part, to a low level of the cytokine osteopontin. Overall, the findings imply that the sustainable rejuvenation of aged HSCs in vivo must address the influence of an aged niche.
