Induction of Alveolar Type I Cells from iPSCs

Due to the difficulty in isolating and culturing primary alveolar type I (AT1) cells, the mechanism underlying their differentiation from alveolar type II (AT2) cells remains incompletely understood. Now, researchers led by Shimpei Gotoh (Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan) have identified AT1 cells in human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived alveolar organoids and highlighted their similarity to primary cells. Overall, this new STEM CELLS article from Kanagaki et al. underscore the potential utility of iPSC-derived AT1 cells in understanding their differentiation from AT2 cells in vitro.
