hPSC-derived Beta Cells with Enhanced Function

A recent STEM CELLS Translational Medicine article from the lab of Reena Singh (University of Sydney, NSW, Australia) reports on how the culture of human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived beta cells on basement membrane proteins enforces structural polarity and significantly enhances glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. These findings suggest that adding islet-associated environmental cues could represent a promising route to enhance the function of hPSC‐derived beta cells.
