Genome Editing of Adult Stem Cells

In a new review article in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine, researchers led by Karim Benabdellah and Francisco Martin (University of Granada, Spain) discuss the potential benefits of genome editing technologies to improve gene and cell therapy approaches based on adult stem cells. Benabdellah et al. provide a summary of genome editing platforms and techniques, discuss critical therapeutic approaches that have been successfully used to treat diseases in animal models, and evaluate whether genome editing in adult stem cells will become a real alternative to retroviral vectors in a gene and cell therapy setting.
