CXCL12 Protects from Radiation and Mobilizes HSPCs

In a recent STEM CELLS article, researchers led by Camilla Forsberg (University of California Santa Cruz, USA) implement a novel, inducible C‐X‐C Motif Chemokine Ligand 12 (CXCL12, or SDF1) overexpression mouse model to enable an in-depth mechanistic interrogation of CXCL12 function in development and disease. Rajendiran et al. demonstrate that CXCL12 influences trafficking, proliferation, and radioresistance of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors (HSPCs) and underscore the importance of these findings to our understanding of hematopoietic development, cancer, and transplantation therapies.
