CEBPβ Promotes MuSC Quiescence

Previous research has uncovered relatively little regarding the mechanisms regulating muscle stem cell (MuSC) quiescence; however, researchers led by Nadine Wiper‐Bergeron (University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) recently employed an unbiased approach to establish that transcription factor CCAAT/Enhancer Binding Protein beta (C/EBPβ) overexpression induces the expression of quiescence‐associated genes in myoblasts. Reporting in a new STEM CELLS article, Lala‐Tabbert et al. identified Caveolin‐1 as a target of C/EBPβ required for cell growth arrest in vitro and demonstrated its essential role in maintaining MuSC quiescence in steady-state adult muscle.
