Bead-to-Bead Transfer for MSC Manufacturing

Large-scale expansion of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in stirred tank bioreactors remains a challenging prospect as cells exhibit limited proliferative potential and display sensitivity to enzyme-induced damage. In a new STEM CELLS Translational Medicine article, researchers led by Katsuhiko Nakashima (Showa Denko Materials Co. Ltd, Kanagawa, Japan) now report that culture medium supplemented with nucleosides significantly promotes MSC proliferation in conventional and microcarrier-based suspension culture. Furthermore, Chen et al. describe a bead-to-bead cell transfer process with intermittent agitation for cell culture scale-up in bioreactors, which maintained the proliferation, viability, and normal phenotype of MSCs.
