Amniotic Membrane Matrix Supports LEPCs
In a recent STEM CELLS article, researchers led by Scheffer C. G. Tseng (Tissue Tech, Inc, Miami, Florida, USA) report that a purified human amniotic membrane matrix (HC‐HA/PTX3) can reverse the senescence of the limbal niche cells that support the self‐renewal of limbal epithelial progenitor/stem cells (LEPCs). Chen et al. also demonstrate that the reprogramming of the limbal niche cells associates with the activation of CXCR4 and BMP signaling. This new study explains why amniotic membrane transplantation boosts the in vivo and ex vivo expansion of human LEPCs and suggests the HC‐HA/PTX3 matrix as a surrogate niche for regenerative medicine.
