ALR Regulates Liver Stem Cells

Augmenter of liver regeneration (ALR – also known as Hepatopoietin [HPO] and growth factor ERV1-like [GFER])  regulates mitochondrial dynamics in hepatocytes, thus offering protection against liver injury; however, whether ALR exerts a similar function in adult liver stem cells and could support cell transplantation in the damaged liver remains unknown. Now, a STEM CELLS study from the lab of Wei An (Capital Medical University and the Municipal Key Laboratory for Liver Protection and Regulation of Regeneration, Beijing, China) demonstrates that ALR supports the therapeutic function of liver epithelial progenitor cells, thus helping them combat liver injury after cell transplantation and offering immense curative potential in the clinic.
