Wnt Signaling and EPC Metabolism

Researchers from the labs of Xiao‐rong Li (Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, China) and Jian‐Xing Ma (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, USA) recently set out to understand how Wnt signaling regulates endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) fate during neovascularization. Writing in STEM CELLS, Shao et al. discovered that the Wnt signaling pathway regulates EPC metabolism, EPC fate and subsequently, new vessel formation and highlighted a new function of Wnt signaling in regulating mitochondrial function. Furthermore, this exciting study proposes the use of EPC metabolic profiles as a diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for diseases caused by abnormal blood vessel formation.
