PI3K Inhibition Enhances the Trophoblast Stem Cell State

To delineate what signaling cascades control the stem cell state of mouse trophoblast stem cells, researchers led by Myriam Hemberger (University of Calgary, Canada) and Cheryl QE Lee (Institute of Medical Biology, Singapore) recently performed a kinase inhibitor screen. Intriguingly, the authors established that the inhibition of PI3K signaling increases the expression of trophoblast stem cell markers in contrast to other cell types, where PI3K inhibition leads to differentiation and apoptosis.
